Waffle is on a mission to close the gender gap in Japan’s tech industry by empowering and educating young girls and non-binary students.
Founded in November 2019, this innovative NPO offers hands-on programs and advocates for systemic change to ensure that more women can thrive in technology. Here’s a breakdown of Waffle’s impact and why their work is so crucial.
Vision: Closing the Gender Gap in Tech
Mission: Waffle aims to close the gender gap by empowering and educating women and non-binary individuals in the technology field.
1. Programs and Initiatives
Hands-On Programs: Waffle provides a range of practical, hands-on opportunities for girls and non-binary students to explore the tech field.
Waffle Camp: A one-day course for middle and high school students to develop websites, aiming to instill the mindset that "IT is fun" and "I can be involved in IT."
Waffle College: A year-long program for liberal arts college students, helping them transition into IT careers through intensive programming courses and internships.
Technovation Girls: An international app development competition encouraging future female IT entrepreneurs to solve social issues through technology.
2. Impact by the Numbers
Gender Gap Statistics in Japan:
Only 3.4% of 15-year-old girls in Japan are interested in ICT-related jobs.
Just 16% of female students pursue studies in the College of Engineering.
Program Reach in FY 2023:
Waffle impacted approximately 700 participants through various hands-on programs.
Waffle Camp: Reached 179 participants across 17 cities.
Technovation Girls: Engaged 409 participants from all 47 prefectures.
Waffle College: Supported 100 liberal arts college students.
3. Addressing the Root Causes
Societal Stereotypes: Waffle tackles the gender stereotypes that often dissuade girls from pursuing STEM fields.
Educational Choices: They emphasize early exposure to IT to counteract the “leaky pipeline,” where female students are less likely to continue in STEM fields as they progress through their education.
Building Confidence: Through mentorship, role models, and success stories, Waffle works to build the confidence and ambition of girls and non-binary students in tech.
4. Recognition and Awards
Awards: Waffle has earned significant recognition, including the Japan SDGs Award, sponsored by the Japanese government, and Co-Founder and CEO Sayaka Tanaka’s spot in Forbes Japan's 30 Under 30 for her efforts in driving gender equality in the tech sector.
5. Why Waffle’s Work Matters
Empowerment: By giving young girls and non-binary students the tools and support they need, Waffle is not only helping them enter the tech field but also ensuring they thrive as future leaders.
Long-Term Change: Waffle’s advocacy for more inclusive education policies is helping to shift societal norms and open doors for the next generation of women in tech.
