Tochigi Conservation Corps ( トチギ環境未来基地 ) is an organization dedicated to preserving and revitalizing local forests and satoyama (traditional rural landscapes) while fostering youth engagement in environmental conservation.
Established in 2009, the organization focuses on providing opportunities for young people to participate in hands-on environmental work, with the goal of developing future leaders in environmental stewardship. Their work includes forest maintenance, bamboo grove clearing, and restoration of areas affected by disasters, such as the coastal forests damaged by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
The mission of the organization is to connect people with nature, fostering both the environment and the individuals who engage with it. By involving youth in conservation efforts, Tochigi Conservation Corps helps create a "green career path," empowering participants to gain skills that benefit both the environment and their personal growth. Their efforts extend beyond simple forest management to community building, offering activities such as forest play programs for children, forest cooking, and health programs—all designed to deepen people's connection to nature.
One of the key initiatives is their long-term volunteer program, modeled after the U.S. Conservation Corps, where participants live and work in rural areas while contributing to environmental and community projects. This program has gained international attention, with participants from countries like Mexico and Kyrgyzstan joining to support reforestation and conservation activities in Japan.
Looking ahead, Tochigi Conservation Corps aims to expand their reach by creating more entry points for people to engage with nature and collaborating with diverse organizations to further broaden their impact. They are also working to ensure that younger generations continue to take an active role in protecting and preserving Japan’s natural landscapes for the future.
