Supporting the Japan Children's Hospice Association—A Lifeline for Families in Need

Updated: Oct 11

At the heart of every family is the bond that keeps them going, through good times and bad. But for families facing the immense challenges of life-threatening conditions (LTCs) in children, that bond is tested in unimaginable ways. This is where the Japan Children's Hospice Association (JCHA) steps in—offering a place of relief and comfort for these families.

What is a Children's Hospice?

In Japan, many children live with severe illnesses such as pediatric cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders. These children, along with their families, often face long periods confined to hospitals or homes, limiting their ability to experience everyday joys. The Japan Children's Hospice Association aims to change that by creating a space where children can just be children again—a "second home" where families can find relief from their daily struggles.

Children’s hospices offer a safe and supportive environment where families can take a break, allowing them to relax and recharge while their child receives special care. It’s a place where families can spend quality time together, share meaningful moments, and build memories during their challenging journey.

A Growing Movement Across Japan

Inspired by long-established children’s hospices in other parts of the world, Japan is steadily growing its network of these important facilities. The JCHA works to spread awareness, build partnerships, and strengthen the foundations of children’s hospices across the country. Their mission is to ensure no family has to face these difficulties alone, no matter where they are.

A standout example of this movement is the Yokohama Children's Hospice, the first community-based children's hospice in the Kanto region. Thanks to support from events like the Tokyo Yamathon, this hospice has provided comfort to hundreds of families. In 2023 alone, 259 families benefited from its services, with even more expected to find support as the network continues to grow.

The Ongoing Need for Resources

Despite the progress made, the need for children's hospices far exceeds the available resources. Building and maintaining these facilities requires significant funding—up to 500 million yen just to construct a hospice and around 50 million yen annually to keep it running. Beyond the financial aspect, there’s also the need for dedicated staff and volunteers to provide care and support to these families.

This is why the JCHA has established a national network to connect organizations, companies, and individuals who support their mission. By building a strong support system, they aim to increase public understanding and improve resource-sharing across the country.

How Tokyo Yamathon Participants Can Help

The Tokyo Yamathon is proudly supporting the JCHA and its partner hospices. Donations from Yamathon participants have directly contributed to expanding and sustaining these essential facilities. From funding educational events to building awareness campaigns, your contributions help make these spaces available to more families in need.
