Now recruiting volunteers for the 2025 Yamathon!

VOLUNTEERS ROLE INTRODUCTION
Volunteers* play a critical role in making the Tokyo Yamathon even more meaningful.
At the same time, we also want our volunteer members to enjoy themselves through our activities.
Please get involved and have fun with us!
TEAM LEADERS

As a Team Coordinator, you’re the glue that holds the volunteer experience together. Working closely with the Volunteer Director, your role is to make sure everything runs smoothly, that every volunteer knows what they’re doing, and that they’re having a rewarding, positive experience throughout the day. You’ll start by helping to brief volunteers at the beginning of their shift, making sure they understand their tasks, feel welcomed, and know who to come to with questions — that’s you. Throughout the day, you’ll manage break schedules and rotate volunteers through different roles. This helps prevent burnout and keeps the energy high, giving everyone a chance to try something new and stay engaged. You’ll also be the go-to problem-solver when things come up — whether someone’s running late, a station needs backup, or we’re short on supplies. You’ll help smooth out the rough spots and keep things moving forward. Just as important, you’ll help keep spirits up. A quick check-in, a bit of encouragement, or even grabbing someone a snack can go a long way. You’ll also keep the Volunteer Director updated on how things are going in the field, letting them know what’s working and where support might be needed. This role is perfect for someone who’s organized, adaptable, and good at reading the room. You’ll help create a fun, supportive atmosphere that brings out the best in our volunteers and makes them want to come back again and again. If something’s off, you’ll help fix it. If someone’s overwhelmed, you’ll help balance the load. And when a volunteer crushes it, you’ll be the first to celebrate them.
TABLET MASTERS

As a Tablet Master, you're the digital command center at the finish line. You’ll be using Webscorer tablets to log team finish times and ensure everything is recorded accurately and efficiently. It’s a role that combines sharp attention to detail with warm, positive energy. You’ll be among the first to congratulate teams as they complete their adventure. At the same time, you'll confirm they’ve successfully met the challenge — including verifying required checkpoints and photos when needed. Your job is to help maintain the integrity of the event while making sure every team finishes with a smile. This team covers a few key areas: timing input, rankings review, photo checkpoint verification, and general data coordination. You’ll also keep the Volunteer Director and other key roles in the loop if any issues pop up. This role is perfect for someone who’s calm, focused, comfortable using tablets or apps, and enjoys helping people wrap up their day on a high note.
PHOTOGRAPHERS

Help us capture the magic of the day. We’re looking for experienced photographers who can take high-quality photos of teams in action — from candid moments on the course to joyful finish line poses. Whether it’s a group powering through the city or a parent and child crossing the line hand-in-hand, you’ll be helping tell the story of the Yamathon through your lens. If you’ve got your own gear and know how to frame a great shot in fast-paced, real-world settings, we want to hear from you. You’ll work from a shot list and also have creative freedom to chase the moments that matter. Both candid and posed shots are essential. Your photos may be featured on our website, social media, and future promotions — so your work won’t just be appreciated, it’ll be celebrated. Let us know what kit you’re using and share a few samples if possible. We’d love to see your style.

CLOCK COORDINATORS

The guardians of the finish line’s most iconic photo moment — the “money shot.” As teams complete their journey, you’ll help them capture a perfect photo in front of the sponsor board, with the big timing clock showing their finish time. You’ll manually adjust the clock between teams to match their official finish time (we’ll show you how — no engineering degree required). This small but mighty job makes a big impact, giving each team a moment they’ll remember and share. If you’re detail-oriented, good with timing, and enjoy being part of the post-walk celebration buzz, this is a great fit.
FINISH GUIDES

As a Finish Guide, you’ll assist teams after they cross the finish line and help them navigate the post-event area. Your job is to make sure each team hits all the necessary checkpoints — including photo verification, official timing confirmation, visiting the sponsor photo stations, and reviewing their final ranking. You’ll provide clear directions, answer any questions, and help maintain a smooth and welcoming flow through the finish area. It’s a great role for someone who’s organized, approachable, and ready to help participants wrap up their day with ease.
CHEERERS

Bring the energy! As a Cheer Volunteer, your role is all about encouragement, direction, and creating a memorable experience for every Yamathon participant. In the morning shift, you’ll welcome teams as they arrive at nearby train stations, guide them to the start line venue, and help build the excitement before they begin their adventure. You’re the first smile they see — so make it count! In the afternoon and evening shifts, you’ll be stationed near the finish line to guide participants to the correct entrance and celebrate their accomplishment. Your enthusiasm helps cap off their journey on a high note. Whether you’re waving signs, high-fiving walkers, or just offering a warm welcome, this role is perfect for people with positive vibes, loud voices (or signs that do the talking), and a talent for lifting spirits.

AYA ITO
I joined Yamathon in 2016 for the very first time, as I was asked to help the event as a one-day volunteer (just a couple days before the event!!). I had no idea about the event or what I was expected to do there, but I just jumped in and I thought I would just help the event only once. At the event, I helped tracking team goal records and worked closely with organisers all day, and I was so inspired and moved by not only the goals of the event, but also great passions and affectionate the organisers shared with me. Since then, I joined Yamathon as 1-day volunteer, organisers team, and as a participant every year. I remember that we spent many weekends and worked 2 or 3am on weekdays for Yamathon when I was in an organisers team. Although we were extremely busy and exhausted, the team was always thoughtful, cared and encouraged each other and this gave us great bond and made us “family”. I continuously join Yamathon because I really love and admire the people who are so dedicated and working unbelievably hard for this event. And Yamathon is a great opportunity to make someone happy while you enjoy meeting new people, building bond with your friends, and having fun.

MIYU KAMEYAMA
In 2018, I joined the Yamathon as a volunteer. By joining as a staff, I experienced how hard it is to make the event exciting and also understood a little about how to work with adults in real society. I cheered and guided the finishing teams, announcing the rankings, and held the finish line tape. I really enjoyed the tasks so much and worked so hard that others became worried and forced me to take breaks. Through volunteer work, I became aware of what I could do for the society, what skills I could use, and understood that the adult society doesn’t work as I expected. I also realized how great Yamathon was. At the beginning, I was feeling negative about the whole event. I never understood why people enjoy walking around the Yamanote line. To me, they were just doing it to tire themselves out. However, I saw people in all teams showing happy faces when they finished walking. I also felt really happy and great that I had waited for my friends who were participating to finish. When I my friends reached Tokyo Station, I walked with them to the finishing point. There. I had a strange sense of feeling that was almost like a dream, but I can’t express more. I think everyone who joined Yamathon shared the similar sense of happiness.
